Powered by CBD Health and Wellness Magazine, CBD Expo WEST 2019 will have a CANNABINOID + NATURAL PRODUCTS focus is the original CBD event platform to broadcast your products with the community and share your CBD knowledge with the industry. We focus on targeting the relevant and right people to be in the right place creating a quality show floor that business can be conducted on. This event will feature more than 75 exhibitors, along with a substantial lineup of speaker presentations and panel discussions from experts in the research, technology, production, globalization, and sale of CBD and cannabidiol products. In our constant effort to provide fresh, relevant, and original content we make sure there are no repeat presentations from past Expos.
New natural products are being created every day. Organic chemists are in short supply. Clean cannabinoids are scarce. Regulatory requirements are expanding. Production costs are rising. Consumer expectations are changing and new technology is advancing at a mind-boggling pace to meet a growing demand.
Change and disruption to the cannabis industry are coming from all sides, creating a significant opportunity for those ready to seize it. Now more than ever, cannabinoid compounders and formulators need to tap into the expertise of researchers in this industry in order to implement solutions that are right for their operations.
This is the Original CBD Expo Tour’s 2019 finale, uniquely designed to bring together formulators across the natural products industry and unite them with the comprehensive knowledge and resources they need to adapt and thrive in this ever-growing cannabinoid realm.
The immune system is the human body's first line of defense against external attack, and is incredibly complex. Autoimmune disorders, of which there are currently more than 80 officially registered, remain largely misunderstood. While most prescription medication treatments aim to suppress the immune system altogether, CBD has exhibited the ability to modulate the immune system instead, changing it instead of disabling it. In this panel we will examine the advances in using cannabinoids as an effective — and frequently far less detrimental — treatment for autoimmune disorders.
In today's early stages of the legal hemp marketplace, there are thousands of CBD products available, yet not much in the way of differentiation - at least not knowingly in most cases. All legitimate CBD products contain at least some amount of cannabidiol, but they may also contain (or specifically not contain) other elements, depending on how they're labeled. In this panel, we examine and specifically define the terms relating to this phenomenon: hemp-derived, cannabis-derived, full spectrum, broad spectrum, CBD isolate and more.
If you’re an avid PubMed-er (the Google of the academic world), you may have noticed a recent uptick in the number of studies published on cannabinoids. Even if you’ve never once used PubMed, the media stories on cannabis research flooding your social feeds is another good indicator of both the number of studies coming out and the increasingly interest from various outlets. With the approval of Epidiolex by the FDA, patients with severe pediatric epilepsy can now receive a prescription for GW Pharma’s CBD formulation. And in the coming years, we will likely see more cannabinoids approved as medicines for various conditions. Clinical trials are evaluating various cannabinoids for neurodegenerative disorders, gastrointestinal disease, respiratory conditions, infectious diseases, and cancer. And additional research is looking into solving some of the most challenging aspects of cannabinoid medicine, including dosing and method of delivery.
Cannabinoids have shown enormous promise as treatments for neurological diseases. In fact, studies have shown that CBD may be beneficial in treating people with Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and multiple sclerosis. Additionally, Epidiolex (an FDA-approved CBD formulation from GW Pharma) is now available for patients with severe pediatric epilepsy. The American Academy of Neurologists (AAN) published a systematic review of data on cannabinoids. This review recognized that there is strong evidence supporting the potential for CBD to treat spasticity associated with multiple sclerosis. However, additional data are necessary to better understand how CBD might be used to treat other neurological disorders. As many neurologists look to the AAN for guidance, additional data will help shape future reviews and guidelines and likely the perspectives of prescribing neurologists.
One of the challenges in the emerging CBD market is the lack of robust clinical research that can be used to guide dosing guidelines. This is especially problematic in people with comorbidities or on other medications who would like to explore taking these products medicinally too. Even so, crowdsourcing the anecdotal data has allowed companies to develop a functional measure of how much CBD is needed for different conditions. This system, albeit lacking in strong foundations in clinical trials, in some ways is good enough. But when it comes to a product we want to promote as medication, we have a responsibility to produce real data from which to work off of.
The opioid crisis has opened the eyes of physicians, policy makers, and the general public to the unmet need of people with chronic and acute pain. That is, the need for an effective, safe treatment with a low risk of dependence or abuse. And, as many have already discovered, cannabidiol may fulfill all criteria. There is overwhelming evidence that cannabinoids, including CBD, are very effective analgesics that appear to be quite safe. While additional research is necessary to better understand how each formulation and delivery method affects both acute and chronic pain, studies have shown that patients have been able to either switch or reduce the amount of opioids taken for pain when cannabinoids have been incorporated into their daily regime. For many people, CBD provides much-needed relief.
In the same way that we take steps to protect and safeguard our personal property — homes, vehicles, jewelry, etc. — so too must we protect and safeguard our intellectual property. In the rapidly-expanding CBD marketplace, it's more important than ever to ensure that your valuable ideas are not vulnerable to those looking to take advantage. In this panel, we will examine effective methods for safeguarding intellectual property, in addition to examining why this is such a worthwhile endeavor. Avoid becoming the Nikola Tesla of CBD!
By the end of 2025, the global hemp market is predicted to reach more than $146 Billion, with a capital "B". As medical and scientific R&D continues to legitimize the industry, pushing it continuously further, there has never been a more pressing time to establish industry-wide quality assurance standards in order to ensure safety for human consumption. In this panel, we explore the current state of quality assurance standards, in addition to how and why they need to be updated.
Plant breeding has been practiced for thousands of years for a variety of purposes. Through selective breeding, we can influence many aspects of hemp plants. In particular, breeding can influence cannabinoid concentration, terpene yield and profile, and organoleptic properties like smell and appearance. Selective breeding can also be used to design hybrid cultivars that possess desired properties from different plants, just like dog breeders have attempted with the labradoodle. In this panel, we examine the current reasoning and methodologies behind the breeding of hemp plants, and take a look towards what the future holds for this age-old practice.
Investing in the stock market is, by definition, a gamble. Getting in on the ground floor of a stock before it blows up can be downright life-changing. Today, the global hemp market is worth approximately $50 billion dollars; and over the next decade, experts are predicting that number will nearly triple. In this panel, we give you the rundown on how you can maximize your investment in cannabis-related stocks while they are still relatively underappreciated.
The process of extracting cannabinoids from hemp has evolved. From ethanol and CO2 to even butane, there are a number of methodologies currently at your disposal. The best first question to answer is "what types of products do you want to design?" Additionally, while some techniques require larger sums of money upfront, others can be limited by the amounts of solvents able to be stored, waste generation, or health and safety considerations, including of the final consumer product. In this panel we take a closer look at these methodologies, as well as the potential differences in the resulting product.
So you started a cannabidiol business and are looking to scale up but not sure how? The key to a successful company is good marketing–and CBD is no exception. But even for seasoned pros, the transition to CBD may be a bit bumpy. The blossoming industry is going through some growing pains as regulators work to come up with guidelines. While this is going on, marketers are floating in a grey area–you want to sell your product/service and tell people about it but you don’t want to overhype the benefits either. To avoid the chaos, consider developing marketing messages that are based in the science of the product and reflect the needs of the consumer/patient audience. A strategic integrated approach targeted to key stakeholders with messages that carefully balance product/service benefits is a good start to kick off long-lasting relationships with patients and consumers.
In five hours you will receive an overview of the principles and practices of CBD extraction. With many hands on demonstrations you will leave with an understanding how coffee, hemp and clothes are similar. You will appreciate the vast number of ways to make eggs, tea, as well as cake and how you can increase your productivity with hemp. Good is not a number. You will gain an understanding of measuring the potency at each stage of sample preparation, extraction and post processing; saving you thousands of dollars a week.
Sharing on that we will discuss the medicinal aspects of CBD and the support it has to health care with a focus on senior issues. It will be presented that the aliments of angsty, sleeplessness, chronic pain and opioid prescriptions are some of the top affliction that seniors experience on a daily basis. With introducing myself and my background of Ayurvedic, holistic and Chinese medicine I hope to establish a connection with guests as I learn what their interest brings them to why they are participating in the Senior CBD for You and Me Workshop.
In more archaic times, cannabinol, or CBN, was a “freshness” indicator for commercial cannabis products, since tetrahydrocannabinol naturally degrades to this cannabinoid over time. These days, however, we’ve become savvier to reaping the full benefits of the phytomolecules within hemp plants. Growing hemp solely for CBD means there’s going to be abundant waste, not just in the useful, but squandered biomass, but also from not utilizing everything that the plant chemically offers. And like its cannabinoid brethren, CBN imparts therapeutic benefits, the most well-known of which is as a sleeping aid. CBN also has been evaluated as an anti-inflammatory, as an analgesic, and as an appetite stimulant, to name a limited few. This panel is dedicated to illuminating this previously cast aside molecule, bringing it back into the discussion where it always should have been.
Cannabinoid creation inside hemp plants begins with cannabigerolic acid, or CBGA. Enzymes inside the plant catalyze chemical reactions, which produce the more common and more abundant cannabinoids in the plant, such as CBD. Not all CBGA, however, metamorphosizes into something else. Thus, researchers are studying what CBGA or its decarboxylated neutral form, CBG, can offer therapeutically. What they’ve unearthed has been extraordinary. One study demonstrated CBG’s ability to inhibit colon cancer growth in mice. Another found that mice given CBG ate more frequently, thus, highlighting the potential of this molecule in future cancer treatments. Additionally, CBG offers a two-pronged attack against physical and mental benefits from relieving one’s pain, and given its action inside of our bodies, this cannabinoid presents an exciting option in treating depression. These examples provide a flavor of what this powerful molecule can do, but as more clinical research continues to unveil its full potential, the true effects on humans will be lucid. This panel is dedicated to this mother of other cannabinoids, not just as a molecular building block, but as an impressive healer.
We needn’t cultivate hemp just to extract CBD down to its isolate form, and maybe add in a few co-extracted terpenes. That would waste a significant portion of the polypharmacy offered by the hemp plants. There are several other molecules in hemp that can provide therapeutic benefits, including cannabichromene (CBC), a cannabinoid that some have hypothesized as being one of the most valuable molecules in the plant. CBC binds to receptors that are involved in pain perception and inflammation. This cannabinoid also has demonstrated promise in cancer applications, glaucoma, acne, and better brain functionality. This panel will enlighten you on what the research has established for this up and coming cannabinoid.
As explorations of the medicinal applications of cannabinoids extracted from hemp continue to unveil powerful therapeutic alternatives, the demand for pharma-grade molecules likely will increase. This could be, in part, a purification pathway, such that the cannabinoid-powered soup drawn from deconstructed plants can be further fractionated into its individual ingredients. As product formulators continue to recognize the merit of using full- or broad-spectrum products, they can first purify their starting materials such that precise concentrations of each desired ingredient can be added to the designed formulation. Or, those utilizing CBD isolate can refine the starting oils to effectively remove all other chemical ingredients, including heavy metals and residual pesticides that can taint lower grade materials. There are multiple methods for achieving this, including initial product refinement techniques like winterization and activated carbon filtration, each removing an assortment of molecules. To refine even further, options like distillation or supercritical fluid chromatography can be employed. This panel dives in to these methods, including what these options entail, and how they can best be implemented.
CBD might be the well known cannabinoid regularly extracted from hemp plants, but it is not the only one. Minor cannabinoids, such as CBG and CBC have medicinal properties of their own. While these cannabinoids are typically in much lower concentrations within the plant, they can still be isolated and purified using methods like flash or supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC). The isolation of these cannabinoids, such that adequate purity is achieved, is paramount for better understanding what benefits these cannabinoids impart. In addition, techniques like SFC can help clean up mother liquors to ensure that all of the gold is extracted from the garbage. In this panel we examine why these minor cannabinoids present such an exciting new development for the industry, how to extract and purify them, and what the future may look like as a result.
Cannabidiol has become the darling of the cannabinoid industry – and for good reason. This powerful compound possess a wide array of benefits, spanning from anti-inflammatory properties to sedative, sleep-inducing calm. Whether a patient or just someone interested in trying it out, CBD may be a great addition to a daily routine. However, buyers beware, as many companies have been moving in on the CBD trend but do not have the expertise needed. For one thing, due to lack of industry regulations, that bottle of 500 mg CBD oil may not actually contain 500 mg of CBD; even worse, there may be harmful chemicals left over from the growing/manufacturing process. So, what to do? Ask your CBD supplier where your CBD was grown, if product-testing results are available, how long they have been working with the company who makes the product, whether others who have used the product have seen beneficial effects, and if they trust the company providing the product. When in doubt, do your own research so you are an informed consumer.
Everyone’s selling CBD products; farmers’ markets, gas stations, beer distributors, even a gun store in Western Pennsylvania. The internet is also peppered with throngs of vendors all making claims regarding their products. But when CBD abounds in nearly every type of marketplace, the questions you should be asking are “where did the hemp come from, how was it grown, and who made these products?” These questions are even more relevant considering the cost of CBD-containing products, which are often more expensive than traditional pharmaceutical drugs. Making these inquiries, however, isn’t a recommendation to strictly consumers. Vendors who white-label products made by contract manufacturers should understand their supplier’s processes. Was the material, for example, made in a facility that was certified under good manufacturing practices (GMP)? Facilities that spend the resources to achieve this certification recognize the power it holds, as it provides enhanced translucency and trust that extends downstream to consumers. And when millions of us are consuming increasing quantities of cannabinoids and terpenes, knowing that the products we ingest have been meticulously crafted in well-kept facilities that follow standard operating procedures and adhere to detailed documentation practices can help separate quality manufacturers from those strictly interested in quantity. This panel highlights what GMP entails, and why it’s important for the generation of cannabinoid-derived medicine.
As state legislative barriers to hemp cultivation continue to fall in succession, hemp farming has officially, rapidly, and monumentously become a part of the agriculture industry. This is a huge opportunity for a wide variety of industry players, as long as you are able to stay in the USDA's good graces. In this panel, we examine the current issues arising from these historical, yet evolving industry-wide changes in law, and how best to stay ahead of the curve, compliant, and legal.
Paying taxes is typically a high-stress exercise even under the most optimal of circumstances. Tax issues as they relate to the consistently growing and changing cannabis industry tend to be on another level entirely. Paying a portion of your income to the federal government in taxes, when that very federal government does not recognize your business as a legal enterprise, can be downright maddening. In this panel, we examine the convoluted current state of taxes as they relate to our industry, to ensure that you are able to both remain in legal compliance and hang on to as much of your hard-earned income as possible.
CBD for pets is a rapidly growing industry trend both in pet owner popularity and CBD products targeted specifically for our furry friends. While the appeal is real, the science behind how CBD can benefit other members of the animal kingdom is still developing. The endocannabinoid system exists within all of our pets from pugs to ponies, but how does CBD affect these creatures and can they truly benefit from the effects this cannabinoid offers in humans? This panel will dive into the science and skepticism surrounding CBD for pets and examine how our loyal companions stand, or sit, to benefit from its use.
Cannabidiol is incredibly valuable from a versatility standpoint. It seems like every day a new or improved application for CBD is developed. As this process continues, the marketplace for products infused with the cannabinoid, such as cosmetics, medicine, cuisine and more, the opportunity for success in this arena grows. In this panel we discuss ways for you to capitalize on this industry trend, and what the future likely holds.

Detailed chemical product knowledge is the keystone of any leading cannabis brand. In addition to being required for regulatory mastery, compositional claims of specific Ensemble Effects purported to be provided by a particular cannabis formulation can only be made when a consistent product is produced. Consistency is cannabis is defined by the chemistry of the end product formulation. Production of consistent cannabis products is driven by deep analytical understanding of the compositional specifics responsible for driving end product physiological effects. With a myriad of diverse product forms and formulations available, sophisticated analytical methodology must be deployed and rigorously adhered to throughout the production process to ensure the same product is prepared each and every single batch. This presentation will describe analytical and production method considerations for the formation of scalable standardized cannabis compositions.
