No longer simply a trend, hemp-based CBD is making a huge financial impact in the spa and wellness industries. With recent legislative changes and ongoing research, the hemp-based CBD industry is expected to grow from $590 million in 2018 to over $2 Billion in 2019; reaching over $22 Billion by the year 2023. It is anticipated that 25% of those estimated estimated earnings will come from the spa and wellness industry. In this session, you'll learn to navigate this budding opportunity, understand what to look for in labeling, how to select a legitimate product line, how to catalog in your POS system, how to advertise on social media and how to build an effective treatment menu incorporating products and more.
With the rapid development of the industrial hemp industry and the burgeoning market acceptance of cannabidiol (CBD) as a valuable nutraceutical, a major question facing the marijuana and hemp industry right now is - what’s next? Though only two cannabinoids have thoroughly captured the markets interest to date, THC and CBD, over one hundred naturally occurring cannabinoids exist, and there is a vast therapeutic potential for many of these molecules given the prevalence of endocannabinoid receptors in mammals. A basic understanding of these other cannabinoids, as well as the synergistic medicinal effects in treatment with other cannabinoids and terpenes promises to be a huge field moving forward. In this talk I hope to draw a picture of the potential landscape facing the cannabis and hemp industry over the next decade, with a focus on the myriad of different molecules that could be “the next big thing”.

What does it take to pass an audit from Costco's largest pharmacy partner? Brubeck, with his Director of Science and Manufacturing Dr. Jason Hastings, will tell you. Having cGMP, organic, and ICCT certifications, along with an FDA registered facility, Centuria's QAQC team can provide invaluable insight into the steps your company can take today to qualify for the contracts in the largest growth segment emerging in the cannabis space.
In this presentation, Justin analyzes FDA labelling of hemp extract and CBD products under state and federal law. The presentation includes a background of the law prior to implementation of the 2018 Farm Bill, implementation of the 2018 Farm Bill, the status of State Bills after the Farm Bill, and FDA and local agency enforcement.
The question that we wanted answered was: can CBD provide effective relief for a patient population with severe chronic pain issues? Our population includes a diverse age, socioeconomic, and level of severity in regards to chronic pain. Approximately 40% of the patients are on chronic opioid therapy. They are in various stages of their medications including stable, increasing or tapering down on their medications. We have had 10 months of data including CBD taken with various, neuropathic, skeletal muscle relaxant, NSAIDS, and opioids. We have data showing successful CBD use as a mechanism for weaning/tapering down on opioids or avoiding opioids altogether. We feel that with the baby boomer population aging and general interest in CBD increasing and the opioid crisis continuing, CBD should be looked at as a viable medicine for chronic pain syndromes.
In this presentation, I have accumulated my personal patients' success with CBD as well as a study of CBD as a medicinal drug generally and wish to inform audiences of its medicinal potential.
Western medicine is beginning to realize the enormous potential that CBD and other cannabinoids can have on gastrointestinal health. The endocannabinoid system plays a significant role in the complex interaction that exist between gut bacteria as well as the human endocrine, lymphatic, and nervous systems making it an ideal target for cannabinoid therapy. In addition to serving as a powerful tool against a variety of gastrointestinal conditions, evidence continues to accumulate for the potential power of cannabinoids to improve the signaling that exists along the gut-brain axis. The endocannabinoid system can help manage inflammation, improve the health of gastrointestinal cells, affect motility and even possess anti-cancer properties. As a Board Certified Surgeon specializing in cancer and gastrointestinal diseases, there is no doubt we are witnessing the benefits that CBD and cannabinoid therapy can have on a variety of gastrointestinal conditions. New and emerging concepts are being explored that will continue to harness the benefits and expand the use of cannabinoids for multiple gastrointestinal ailments and define their role as a supplement for overall gut health.
When seeking to produce a product or line of products with a third-party manufacturer, a lot of questions arise for a new brand, but answers can be slow to come or difficult to decipher. How much will the products cost to manufacture? What packaging options are available? What timelines should I expect on the first production run and future production runs? How do I choose the right manufacturing partner? Craig Nandoo and Dr. Jenelle Kim have manufactured products in the natural health and cosmetic space for brands that have launched in Whole Food Market, Neiman Marcus, Ritz-Carlton, Mandarin Oriental, Four Seasons and other distribution channels. With more than two decades of experience in bringing products ideas to life, Craig and Dr. Kim will bring clarity to the manufacturing process and walk through the individual phases of production to leave you with an educated perspective on the big picture of the manufacturing process.
Medical marijuana use for pain relief is permitted only in several US states. An alternative to marijuana is cannabis, which is classified as “hemp”. Hemp and its derivatives are no longer controlled substances under federal law. Since THC and CBD are relieving pain by different mechanisms, non-psychoactive hemp/CBD is a valuable and legal alternative to medicinal marijuana. The use of CBD for pain relief is the second main reason among customers purchasing CBD products. However, only 36% of participants in a recent study reported that CBD helps treat their medical conditions. Therefore, the effectiveness of CBD is crucial for pain management. The major problem is the real amount of CBD. More than one in four of CBD products do not contain the CBD amount declared on their labels. Since CBD is water insoluble, its absorption is only 6-8% and CBD products must be formulated for better absorption and bioavailability to increase their pain-relieving effect. Only properly formulated and laboratory tested CBD products will satisfy CBD customers looking for a legal alternative to marijuana.
With the broad availability of hemp oil, the information is confusing for clinicians and dizzying for patients; it is also exciting for entrepreneurs. What do doctors look for in CBD, and what can patients realistically expect? And what does it take to sell your hemp based product to medical offices? Though the definition of "medical grade" does not yet exist in the CBD world, this lecture reviews the common medical uses for hemp based CBD, and the outcomes common amongst users. In his signature humorous style, Dr. Fink will speak to all constituencies: what doctors need to know, what patients need to know, and what sellers need to understand about the medical marketplace.
As the social stigma regarding cannabis treatment in the medical field slowly disintegrates, the potential to use cannabinoids in various portions of the healthcare sector has become more of a reality. Medical research today aims to explore the many ways in which cannabis or its constituents may be able to advance healthcare. The anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory capabilities of cannabinoids and terpenes represent novel areas of research ripe for discovery. From terpenes that can increase the blood-brain barrier permeability, to cannabinoid-based epilepsy therapies, this research brings to light new and novel uses for this already awe-inspiring plant.
When we buy a product for the first time, our natural instinct is to make sure we paid for what’s inside. A certificate of analysis is the cannabis industry’s way of showing that when a customer buys one of our products, they are getting what they paid for. They are the notarized form of our industry and making sure we have them available for each of our products is how we grow our business and thrive. In this time when the cannabis market is ripe for expansion into new target audiences, we must collectively ensure that nothing jeopardizes our reputation or integrity.
Whether it’s coffee, beer, beverages, or food, one of the key staples of creating a well-respected brand is consistency. For food products, that consistency comes in the form of flavor that is replicated exactly the same each and every time. For cannabis formulations, consistency implies cannabinoid and terpene levels that are identical in every batch. But the difficulty extends further than that. Your cannabis starting material comes from wide-ranging sources the larger you are. And terpene isolates are not always of equal quality, origin, or purity. The key to consistency is robust Quality Controls and a rigorous testing program.
In the age of the opioid epidemic, the rising number of mental health drugs being prescribed, and a surge in methamphetamine usage nation-wide, we are encouraged by recent data that shows the potential of CBD to act as a cannabinoid-based therapy. Cannabidiol has been shown to modulate the endocannabinoid system in such a way that it helps to fight addiction on a cellular level. Cannabinoids represent a promising avenue in the treatment of substance use disorder because of their wide therapeutic range and very low potential for toxicity. The discussion will focus on current scientific understanding and future direction of research.
As the number of certified laboratories across the United States grows, so does the amount of data that they produce, as does their expertise. Cannabis cultivators and manufacturers should strive to develop a robust testing regimen as a core part of their business plan. It should include a continuous analysis of their products from every stage in their manufacturing. And the best advocates to help you design the right testing regimen for you are the laboratories themselves. Spend some time considering the elements that a testing laboratory will take into account when deciding which tests and at what frequency are right for you.
The infamous “Emperor of All Maladies”, cancer is truly a multi-headed beast that can strike at any time. More and more, we are discovering that a strong link exists between the emotional and mental state of a patient and their chances of survival. To that end, Advanced Integrative Medical Science, or AIMS, seeks to target the treatment of this disease in much the same way as it attacks the human body: From many angles at once. AIMS brings together specialists and healers from a variety of specialties and clinical practices to treat the physical, emotional, and mental aspects of this affliction.
"The missing piece in many of the new hemp businesses and products is the transparent and authentic engagement of the brand message in its delivery along with the most effective marketing and promotion of it. Mixed with the oversaturation of this new market and thousands of people saying the exact same thing, brand recognition, authority, development, penetration, and engagement are a significant challenge. By internally creating a sound, clearly defined and developed brand with inspiring pieces of content for engagement, the results of that brand and content create a better sell and a better message online and off that achieves greater connections and conversions. Taking the right steps, right from the start to see if a potential brand or business name is not only available but is also something that can be easy to trademark, protect, market and control allows for differentiation and better way to stand out for both investors and customers. Marketing and content that can be built to maintain engagement, continue conversations and simultaneously create organic optimization, while saving tons in advertising, reduces the oversaturated and overheard sell that echoes online every day in the hemp world. Instead of applying external templates from marketing companies that use the same message for competitors, creating more individualized and personalized messages and content internally allows the signals to penetrate a greater audience as it is differentiated from the usual sell. Then with the secure, uniform and protected brand, every piece of content can compound for more results.
One of the greatest results of cannabis legalization has been the implantation of current methods and technology from the scientific sector into the cannabis industry. That technology and human talent has driven great strides in cannabinoid production. One has been the incorporation of CBD into a water-soluble format, which allows greater integration into foods and beverages. Another has been the promising application in the incorporation of microbial cannabinoid expression vectors into the repertoire of CBD manufacturing processes. The challenges with the last methods include specific enzymes necessary to synthesize the highly hydrophobic cannabinoid molecules, but these issues are currently being overcome.
While the cryptocurrency and blockchain markets have experienced a surge in both popularity and value, there is hesitation when it comes to putting money in it. However, our panelists believe that the marriage of crypto and cannabis is a natural one. Decentralized money management makes sense for an industry whose legal stature is still not fully on solid ground. And as more money flows into the coffers of your businesses, the security offered by blockchain remains unparalleled. Learn what these technologies really are, and what they offer to the emerging cannabis market as it begins to enter its international stage.
You’ve done your due diligence under the new law and tracked your cannabis products from seed to sale. All that tracking has yielded a massive amount of data. What can you do with all this information? Quite a lot, it turns out! Analytics such as these can help you improve the metrics of your business. They can inform you where the bottlenecks in the manufacturing lines are, what products sell most and where, and lots more. It also makes investigating a particular batch easier if many returns or complaints are received. Our panel will illuminate other novel ways to use this raw data for your benefit.
Good manufacturing practices are what set apart an amateur operation with no consistency from an industrial facility that is capable of meeting customer needs by delivering high-quality products. When a factory wants to demonstrate that they are capable of playing in the big leagues, they seek out the international stamp of GMP Certification. Not only is it an external demonstration that the facility can operate at an internationally-acceptable level, but the certification process itself requires that the management and the operators learn to adhere to a strict set of guidelines at all times. In other words, it is a badge of an internally valid company structure.
Israel is called the Start-Up Nation because it has the highest number of startup companies per capita in the entire world. In their book by the same name, Senor and Singer identify key features that make companies appealing for acquisition. Among these is an entrepreneurial spirit, a “break the rules” disruption mentality, ease of communication across lines of hierarchy, and of course plain old having a good product. As the cannabis market becomes saturated with new business ventures, make yours stand out by making it attractive from the inside out. This discussion will focus on ways, both quantitative and qualitative, that can demonstrate to larger ventures that you are ripe for the plucking.
Software developers have made having an app for that into a trend all of its own. Programs already exist that allow you to browse the menus of existing facilities, look up terpene profiles of different cultivars, and even search for locations that deliver to wherever you happen to be. But what if we offered a way to combine the popular e-commerce platforms with cannabis retail establishments? The reason why e-commerce establishments are successful is because of their ease of access. Therefore, it’s easy to imagine why digital dispensaries could be the most up-and-coming way that customers will be seeking to fulfill their cannabis needs.
The term “back office” is used these days to describe integral business functions such as accounting, supply chain management, and payroll, as opposed to more “front end”, customer-facing roles. But intentionally or not, these artificial distinctions have created a virtual barrier between key aspects of the same business and have led to a schism in how different branches of a company view the same exact client. Financial Force describes the process of unifying these alternate perspectives into one cohesive picture, available for everyone to work from, regardless of their perceived role. This unification is necessary to significantly increase overall customer satisfaction.
With cannabis fully entering the Canadian legal market on a federal level, the stage has been set for persons and organizations to make a fully licensed investment into cannabinoid companies and indices. Grow your green by, well, growing some green! In some ways, this reminds us of the dot com era, because there are so many people entering the marketplace. This is the hottest emerging industry on the stock listing. Our panel today will discuss strategies to identify companies that are worth investing in now before they make it big tomorrow. Learn what sets apart companies who can make it in the long run.
The 21st Century is in many ways the dawn of the age of technology. It’s said that the amount of data in the world doubles every three years. Each of us carries a miniature super computer inside of our pocket that has access to the sum total of all that knowledge! It’s no surprise then that we should seek to implement some of this new data in our canna-business. Seed to Sale helps with everything from inventory tracking, compliance with state law, and simple business management. Come learn about the specialized software that will help you track your data.

Celeste....thank you again for your great hospitality. You run a first rate operation. A few people I asked to meet me while I was there are now planning on getting into CBD with their products after they saw your show. I also had one of the largest distributors of candy and snacks fly in from Canada and he sees the great potential as well. We hope to show at an upcoming event of yours as we made some key connections for suppliers.
